Tualatin Farmers Market – by Valerie MacQuarrie

I stopped by our  local Tualatin Farmers Market on their opening day this past Friday.. and I have to say, what a treat!  I was expecting to find just the usual produce stalls but instead found much more.  Along with fresh fruits and veggies there was live music and a delicious aroma wafting through the air coming from the various food vendors – from wood-burning oven pizza to Thai food.  I am pretty sure I gained five pounds just standing next to the stall where the guy was frosting the hot mini-donuts, sigh.

I was particularly delighted with the local raw honey, and a jam company serving up creative low-sugar varieties with names like ‘Peach Cinnamon Pinot’ and ‘Plum Cinnamon Walnut’  Yum.  I found the Flying Squirrel peanut butter two stalls down – a perfect accompaniment to my newly acquired jam, with more interesting taste combinations than anyone could ever ask of from their PB.  Click here to see more Flying Squirrel PB

I encourage you to stop by on a Friday from 4-8 pm and check it out for yourself, You might go there for strawberries and come home with some homemade soap.  I did.

Our community is getting closer than ever.  The article about Gabe Karapondo embodies what our “village” can do to help each other.  When there is a need, we rally, we support, and we come together.  A family recovering from a tragic accident will never be easy, but having the support of family, friends, neighbors and an entire community will hopefully provide comfort.  Heroism presents in many forms; it exists in all of us.  Coming through for a family in need is certainly a form of heroism.

Anybody see a bear?  As random as that sounds, most of us are now aware that we had a visit from a 200 lb (at least!) black bear last week in Tualatin.  The excitement, fear, chaos, helicopters flying over, news vans, police from multiple agencies, animal control folks, kids and teachers in the nearby school all made for a highly unusual morning.  Between local wildlife photographer Michael Wilhelm and Officer Eric Hermann of the Tualatin Police, we have some quite amazing photos of this rare incident on page 3.  I’m sure you’ll enjoy them.

I was thrilled to take part in the Tualatin Police Department’s first ever “Police Experience” program, a Citizen’s Academy of sorts.  We covered a variety of experiences and scenarios, including classroom activities, shooting guns and driving police cars.  I have all the details in a rather lengthy article from pages 10-13.  Hopefully others get to experience this for themselves because the perspectives gained were life changing.

Inside this issue there are many ideas for local summer fun, arts, entertainment, camps and activities for kids.  Farmer’s Market opens in June, which is a great way to enjoy a Friday evening.  Be sure to check out the Tualatin Home Improvement Show Saturday, June 25th.

We continue to see a great number of new businesses opening their doors in Tualatin.  Our local economy depends on local consumers.  The dollars they bring in circulate into our local economy and makes Tualatin a better place.  If you have a choice, please shop locally and support our advertisers.
