Coach Dave Brown, boys basketball coach of Horizon Christian High School in Tualatin, is celebrating his 800th career win as a basketball coach – and his students and colleagues are abuzz with excitement!
Coach Brown has roots in southern California. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Long Beach State. After his undergraduate degree, He went on to get his Master’s Degree from Azusa Pacific University. He worked at Fountain Valley High School where he coached basketball for twenty two years in Orange County, California. He has a long history of winning.
Horizon Christian School opened in 2005, and Coach Brown was the second employee hired after founding principal, George Crace. Brown saw an ad for the new high school in the Oregonian and filled out an application. He was then hired as Athletic Director and Basketball Coach. He has taken the 3A boys varsity team to the state for all of the eleven years they’ve been eligible. Of the seven times they’ve made it to the championship game, they’ve won three times.
Brown is not only known for building teams and developing athletic talent. He is known for encouraging, inspiring and investing in the lives of young people. Students then put these leadership skills to work throughout their high school years, college experience, careers and beyond.
Coach Brown and his wife of over fifty-one years, Janet, have raised a beautiful family and have a daughter and four grandchildren. He has a legacy of mentoring, both on and off the court.
Current principal, Scott Olson said, “Witnessing Dave Brown accomplish hundreds of wins at Horizon was incredible. However the wins are part of a much bigger story. A story of hard work, dedication, and a constant reliance on God is what makes the 800 wins so special. The way Dave went about getting those wins by building young men of character is a testament to what Horizon stands for. We have been blessed to have Dave leading the way for our athletic department.”
This basketball season is already off to an exciting start, culminating in Coach Brown’s 800th career win. The competition is fierce, but hopes are high for another appearance at state for the championships. So, the hard work continues amidst celebrating this beloved coach’s milestone.
