Nearly every day, the news reminds us how quickly life can change. Wildfires, powerful windstorms that leave neighborhoods without electricity for days, and flooding from atmospheric rivers are no longer rare events. They’re becoming part of the reality we all share.
The good news is that a little preparation can make a tremendous difference.
Taking time now to prepare your home and family can help ensure you have the essentials to stay safe, warm, and fed if you need to evacuate or shelter in place. Being prepared not only protects your own household, it also gives you the confidence and ability to assist your neighbors until professional responders arrive. In an emergency, knowing your neighbors before disaster strikes can be just as valuable as the supplies on your shelf.
That’s where the Tualatin Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) comes in.
Tualatin CERT trains local volunteers to respond safely and effectively during emergencies. Participants learn how to prepare for disasters and understand the hazards most likely to affect our community.
Training includes practical, lifesaving skills, such as:
- Fire safety,
- Light search and rescue,
- Disaster medical operations, and
- Effective team organization.
We also offer neighborhood preparedness training upon request.
CERT is a nationally recognized program sponsored by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). During this free 25-hour course, experienced instructors teach volunteers what to do when emergency services may be delayed or temporarily unavailable. Graduates have opportunities to continue building their skills through ongoing training, community events, and disaster preparedness exercises, ensuring they remain ready to support their neighborhoods when it matters most.

Free Fall 2026 CERT Training
Classes begin Tuesday, September 15, 2026, and meet Tuesday evenings for seven weeks, followed by a half-day hands-on disaster simulation on Saturday, October 31.
