Tigard resident Virginia Howe Kincaid, a transplant from her hometown of Houston, Texas, by way of Upstate New York and Omaha, will be performing her original one-woman show “Behind Every Bush” at the Magenta Theater, 1108 Main Street, Vancouver, Washington, 7:30 pm on Saturday, August 24. “Behind Every Bush” features Barbara Bush in a meeting over coffee with her biographer (the audience) shortly before her April 2018 death. An additional feature in the production will be the portrayal of Abraham Lincoln by former member of the diplomatic corps and Virginia’s accomplished acting colleague Steve Holgate. Steve has performed his one-man show numerous times with great success.
Virginia’s connection to Barbara is a uniquely personal one. Her mother carpooled with the future First Lady when her brother George and Barbara’s son George were in seventh-grade basketball. Virginia was also married to the late brother-in-law of George H. W. Bush’s Secretary of State and White House Chief of Staff James A. Baker III, so she had a front-row seat to some of the personal vignettes revealed during the performance.
Having been pitched to some nationwide venues, the play premiered in Nebraska and Oregon and will be produced in 2025 by the Hill Country Community Theatre, Cottonwood Shores, Texas.
An actress with more than 45 years’ experience, Virginia has performed several leading roles in four states, among them Baroness Elsa Schraeder (Sound of Music), Dolly Levi (Hello, Dolly!), Auntie Mame (Auntie Mame), Ouiser Boudreaux (Steel Magnolias), Aunt March (Little Women), Violet Weston (August, Osage County), Thelma Cates (‘night, Mother), Juror 10 (Twelve Angry Jurors), Jessie Raistrick (Calendar Girls), and Melissa Gardner (Love Letters). Her one-woman roles included Lady Bird Johnson (Tea for Three), Molly Ivins (Red Hot Patriot), and Erma Bombeck (At Wit’s End). She has also been in a few films and most recently filled a small role in the upcoming Amazon Prime TV series “Criminal,” which is currently filming in Portland and starring Richard Jenkins and Charlie Hunnam.
