Tualatin is growing, and with that growth comes an opportunity to make sure everyone—especially those living in and near downtown—has a meaningful voice in shaping our community’s future.

Last fall, CIO leadership began exploring the creation of a new Downtown Community Involvement Organization (CIO). The reason is simple: since CIO boundaries were first established, new housing has been built, and hundreds of residents now live outside the current CIO areas. Many of these neighbors live in multi-family housing close to downtown and share common concerns tied directly to downtown issues.

The proposed Downtown CIO would include residents from portions of the Riverpark and East CIOs, as well as areas not currently represented by a CIO. (See the area shown on the map.)  Creating this new organization would give downtown-area residents a shared platform for planning, problem-solving, and long-term decision-making.

This effort comes at an important time. The City of Tualatin is in the midst of its Downtown Revitalization project—a multi-year, multi-phase look at how our downtown will grow and evolve. Existing CIO leadership has been actively involved, and a Downtown CIO would ensure that residents who live closest to downtown are fully represented in this process.

Forming a new CIO involves approval of boundary changes by the East and Riverpark CIOs, followed by a formation meeting where residents within the new boundary elect board members, approve bylaws, and submit them to the City Council. Volunteers will be supported throughout the process by current CIO leaders and City staff.

If you live in the proposed Downtown CIO area and want to help shape downtown Tualatin’s future, I encourage you to get involved.
