Tire tread and coffee beans hit the ground at the new location of Local Cyclist, a combination bike shop and cafe on Tualatin Sherwood Road.

“We got that cow sign because there was a butcher shop here,” said joint-business owner Ken McClenahan, as he walked around the new location. “We shopped all around for properties and stuff, and this space was available, and it kind of fit our needs.”

Business partners McClenahan and Stacey Daley officially opened the doors of their new shop location at 8680 SW Old Tualatin Sherwood Rd in January of this year, and said the response had, so far, been steady.

“January is traditionally the slowest month for the bike industry, and we’ve had people come through the doors every single day, which is super positive,” Daley said.

Almost every wall of the store is lined with various types of cycles, and the sound of spinning spokes trills in tandem with the revs of coffee beans being ground. McClenahan told Tualatin Life that he always planned on including a coffee shop in the store, saying that bikes and coffee “just go together.”

“We wanted to do a coffee shop too,” McClenahan said. “We didn’t know that our building would be across the street from a Dutch Brothers.”

Daley agreed with McClenahan, saying that the idea of combining coffee with cycles was “a natural fit.”

“We thought it would be a natural fit for trying to build a community space for riders that would include a comfortable place to hang out and watch a race, grab a pre-ride coffee or an after-ride coffee,” Daley said.

The store offers a full-service shop, as well as a fitting room. The store’s main room also exhibits some historic cycles, like the one-of-a-kind Merz tandem bike dangling from the ceiling, which McClenahan said made the Seattle to Portland race in 8 hours.

McClenahan and Daley both agreed that support for the store had been good since opening, with McClenahan noting that many regular riders in the area had already visited.

The shop’s official “grand opening event” was on March 21 and commemorated the official launch of the new location, along with the store’s website being activated.

Daley told Tualatin Life that she and McClenahan were “thrilled” to officially open their doors to the community.

“We are thrilled to have our doors open and let people know that we are here,” Daley said. “We are excited to be a part of this community and want to share our passion for cycling with everyone.”
