Tualatin youth baseball team wins state title

The Tualatin Junior Baseball of Oregon Senior Federal team capped off a strong season with a state championship this summer. 

The team, made up of seventh and eighth graders, won the state title after finishing first in both their division during the season and the county tournament. 

The Timberwolves went undefeated in the state tournament, finishing out their state title run with a 9-1 win against West Albany. 

Tualatin got the scoring going in the fourth inning with an RBI single from Lucas Bergh. Ben Hovies tripled to bring in two more runs. Easton Grubb had two doubles and two RBIs in the win. Nolan Gregory and Cody Hill also tallied two hits apiece for Tualatin. 

Hill started on the mound for the Timberwolves, going six innings and striking out six while giving up just one hit and no runs. 

The state title was a long time coming for the group, who placed third in state as second- and third-graders, and second in the state as fifth- and sixth-graders. 

In the semifinal game, Oregon City struck first with a run in the top of the first. Tualatin then scored 11 unanswered for the 11-1 win. 

Bergh and Oliver Giboney did a bulk of the damage at the plate, with both players knocking in three runs each. Gregory, Landon Force, and Colton Potter each had two hits for Tualatin. 

On the mound, Bergh went the distance, pitching all five innings, giving up just one run and striking out two. 

Earlier in the tournament, Brandon Pomerleau turned in an impressive start, giving up no runs in four innings pitched. Grubb also pitched a scoreless inning in the win. 

Tualatin opened the state tournament with a 17-7 win against Tigard. 

The offense was spread around in the win, with Bergh, Grubb, and Cayde Campbell all driving in multiple runs. Hill, Hovies, Giboney, and Jack Newton all had an RBI each in the win. Hill, Pomerleau, Gregory, and Newton all walked twice each, and  Bergh walked three times. 

Newton earned the Individual Sportsmanship award for the state tournament, as voted on by the umpires.  

The full roster for the team was: Cody Hill, Easton Grubb, Lucas Bergh, Cayde Campbell, Ben Hovies, Brandon Pomerleau, Colton Potter, Landon Force, Nolan Gregory, Oliver Giboney, and Jack Newton.

The team’s head coach is Chris Hill, and the team’s assistant coaches were Josh Gregory, Bryan Giboney, and Jack Anderson.
