Garden Corner Concept Study Begins in October

BY ROBERT KELLOGG, IBACH CIO PRESIDENT

Since the establishment of the Ibach CIO in October 2011, no issue has commanded more attention and resident complaints than the dangerous conditions in the Garden Corner Curves (105th, Blake and 108th). The roadway through the Curves undulates significantly, providing short to non-existent sight lines, and contains no bike or pedestrian facilities. As the only alternative to Boones Ferry for direct north-south travel into or out of the Ibach CIO, the Curves see a considerable volume of traffic of both residents and drivers seeking to avoid congestion on other roadways. Residents brave enough to walk, jog or bike through the Curves have many stories about near misses with drivers, and homeowners in the Curves have repeatedly experienced property damage from vehicle accidents.

By Jenny Lind Conlee

Three years ago, a then five year old Katie Frazer told her parents, Matt and Tammy, “I want to do something, but you’re going to tell me I’m too little.” As if that statement wasn’t heart-wrenching enough, Katie expressed that what she wanted to do was raise $1,000 to give to Village of Hope in Uganda – an organization that rescues children that were child soldier and sex slaves, as well as their orphaned siblings.

BY BY RYAN J. STILLS, WELLNESS DIRECTOR, CLUBSPORT OREGON

Many people underestimate the importance of movement in daily life. When I say movement, I’m not talking about throwing your arms in the air or wiggling around in your chair – as fun as that can be – but rather movement with the purpose of being fit.

October Blog

The leaves are falling and Autumn’s calling – one of my personal favorite times of the year, and there is so much to do in our fine city! October 15th kicks off what has become one of Tualatin’s, and for that matter, Oregon’s most popular events: The West Coast Pumpkin Regatta. With costumed characters, 1,000+ pound pumpkins, and a cult-like following, the Regatta is expecting to draw 20,000 people this year! Get there early and you can also join the 2016 Regatta Run 5K Run or Walk – A great way to have fun and raise money for the Cpl. Matthew Lembke Memorial Scholarship Fund, benefiting several deserving TuHS students every year. You may have noticed this issue is in your mailboxes a couple of days early. Tualatin Life has a long record of advocating for our readers to get involved with the local political process. There’s a lot going on this year, and I’m not just referring to the heated presidential race… When the opportunity to partner and help promote the Tualatin Chamber’s Candidate Forum came up, we took the unprecedented step of moving our press date up five days so we could give our readers advance notice of the forum that will take place this coming Wednesday, September 28th (Our originally scheduled in-home date). There are several important choices you will be making this year, including electing a State Representative, filling a City Council seat, and deciding on two highly contested measures: 97 (Oregon Business Tax Increase) and 34-247 (Tualatin Term Limits). We also have extensive coverage on the election issues on pages 11-15. There will be another opportunity to meet the candidates a couple of weeks later as the Tualatin Area Aging Task Force presents its own Candidate Forum, with a focus on topics affecting the our older population. Details on page 16 – And speaking of the Task Force, an accompanying story on the facing page 17 illustrates just how effective community involvement can be. This David vs. Goliath story is well worth a read. Don’t forget to support our advertisers. They make a commitment to Tualatin Life because they care about our community, and recognize the value of having an independent voice in the community. As always, we’re happy to hear your comments, ideas, suggestions or complaints. Feel free to contact us directly at the email or phone number below. Freedom Tower: A Look Back In Time

0

It was September 11, 2001, fifteen years ago, when a tragedy of unimaginable destruction struck our country. Terrorist hit the World Trade Center North and South Towers and destroyed the buildings but more dire was the loss of American lives. This event set our country and specifically the City of New York on a path to making the most difficult and important decision. What are we going to do with the site where so many Americans were lost and so much of our country’s pride was destroyed by terrorists?

The Legend Lives On…

1

In an ironic twist of fate the devastating fire that just consumed Clark Lumber Company surprisingly left one Tualatin landmark standing along Boone Ferry Road. In 1944 Herman and Mary Silvey purchased the lot and built a lumber company where a blacksmith shop used to stand. When sons Vincent and Don returned from the service after the war they joined their parents and helped build the hardware store.

Community Warehouse Repairs Water Damage to Estate Store after Clark Lumber Fire

0

When we learned on the evening of July 31 that longtime business and valued neighbor Clark Lumber/True Value Hardware had lost their building to a fire, we were shocked and deeply saddened. As next-door neighbors, we made regular trips to Clark’s and our staff members and volunteers got to know the owners and employees well. Community Warehouse Program Director Jeff Freeman explained, “They were always incredibly helpful and kind-hearted, offering us a hand to find just what we needed for our next project or furniture repair.”
