Two inspiring sculptures, installed in large planters on either side of Veterans Plaza on the Lake of the Commons, are titled “Wings of Freedom” and “Wings of Peace,” representing the core values veterans fight for. A third sculpture, titled “Flames of Honor,” includes an internally lit stained-glass flame to recognize the sacrifice and spirit of veterans.
These large-scale military service-inspired sculptures were installed in May and were selected by Tualatin’s Service-Inspired Art Committee, which included the Arts Advisory Committee, along with local veterans, family members of veterans, and other stakeholders.

This committee reviewed applications from 42 artists across the country and participated in the finalist interviews. The committee selected artist Douwe Blumberg, who is a nationally recognized sculptor and the son and father of veterans.
For more than 25 years, the Tualatin Arts Advisory Committee has strived to “support and inspire the creation and integration of art into our city’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant future.”
Veterans Plaza also features a reflecting pool, seating, a labyrinth, a synthetic turf area and a story circle. The plaza is a key part of the City of Tualatin’s efforts to honor veterans and expand accessible and inclusive parks.
