Ken Ludwig’s Moon over Buffalo is the upcoming May offering from Mask & Mirror Community Theatre. The comedy, directed by Kraig Williams, will run May 5-21 on the Main Stage at Rise Church, 10445 SW Canterbury Lane, Tigard. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
In the madcap comedy tradition of Lend Me a Tenor, the hilarious Moon Over Buffalo centers on George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of the 1950s. At the moment, they’re playing Private Lives and Cyrano De Bergerac in a repertory in Buffalo, New York, with five actors. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George’s dalliance with a young ingénue, they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Unfortunately for George and Charlotte, everything that could go wrong does go wrong, abetted by a visit from their daughter’s clueless fiancé and hilarious uncertainty about which play they’re actually performing, further complicated by Charlotte’s old and deaf stage-manager mother who hates every bone in George’s body.
The cast features Jeff Ekdahl and Shelley Aisner as the married and bickering actors George and Charlotte Hay, Virginia Kincaid as Charlotte’s deaf mother Ethel, Amelia Michaels as their daughter Rosalind Hay, Les Ico as Roz’s ex-love interest Paul, Liana Dillaway as the ingénue Eileen, Jeff Gardner as Roz’s – or is he Eileen’s? – would-be suitor Howard, and John Knowles as the lawyer Richard.
Director Williams enthusiastically states, “After an incredible turnout at auditions, Moon Over Buffalo has been cast, and rehearsals are underway! Easily one of Ken Ludwig’s best scripts, the high-energy and hilarious Moon over Buffalo needs an equally high-energy and hilarious cast, and I’m so thrilled that I could find a cast that fits that to a tee. The audience will see veteran actors of all ages – some Mask & Mirror regulars as well as some new to the M&M theater family. From the first read-thru, I knew we had something special. I’m really looking forward to audiences seeing Moon Over Buffalo. It’s a show you don’t wanna miss!
