Mask and Mirror Community Theatre will present Steven Dietz’s “comedy of suspicion” Private Eyes as part of its edgy Unmasked Series from January 19 – February 4, 2024.
Directed by Tony Broom, the dramedy will be produced at The Tualatin Heritage Center, 8700 SW Sweek Drive, Tualatin, Oregon. Performance times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00.
Audience caveat: The script includes strong language, infidelity, and a gunshot.
Private Eyes has been described as a dark comic mystery about deception and broken trust where the audience is the detective. The playwright Dietz himself described it as a “relationship thriller” in which things are never exactly as they appear, as the audience is led to believe the current situation is real. Is Matthew’s wife Lisa having an affair with British director Adrian, or is the affair part of the play being rehearsed? Or has Matthew imagined it all to have something to report to his therapist Frank? And is the surprising conclusion offered by mystery woman Cory real?
Dietz’s sometimes-hilarious, sometimes-macabre play is a multi-layered story about love and infidelity while rehearsing a play.
Or maybe not.
Broom’s cast features seasoned performers Jeff Gardner and Katie Souza as the actors Matthew and his wife Lisa, Mask and Mirror newcomer Evan Seifert as the play-within-the-play’s director Adrian, Beth Moore as the mystery woman Cory, and Kathleen Silloway as the therapist Frank.
Broom’s crew includes Jodi Johnson as Stage Manager and Costumer and Steve Hotaling as Light and Sound Design and Operator.
Explaining his excitement in directing the show, Broom enthusiastically states, “Stephen Dietz is one of my favorite playwrights, and I’ve been looking forward to directing Private Eyes for a few years. It has twists and turns that keep the cast jumping and the audience guessing. In addition, I’m also excited to bring some new performers to the Mask and Mirror stage.”
