On July 15 after a year’s delay Mask and Mirror Community Theatre will open its live production of James McLure’s Laundry and Bourbon/Lone Star at the Tualatin Heritage Center, 8700 SW Sweek Drive, Tualatin. Performances begin at 7:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays July 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, and 30, and matinees begin at 2:30 pm on Sundays July 17, 24, and 31. As THC seating is limited, advance ticket purchase is recommended (maskandmirror.com). All patrons age 12 and over must show either proof of vaccination, or a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before the show you wish to see. Masks are not required but strongly recommended. Please note this show contains mature themes and language which may not be appropriate for youth.
Laundry and Bourbon/Lone Star is a slice-of-life play about three families trying to make sense of the world in the early ‘70s. Strong forthright Elizabeth Caulder (Amber Green) is trying to support her belligerent husband Roy Caulder (Brick Andrews), who can’t shake off his high school glory days or his traumatic days in Vietnam. Brassy busybody Hattie Deeling (Jody Odowick) married her second choice, the slow-witted Ray Caulder (Blake Copeland), but she faces life practically and loves her husband and children. Spoiled social-climber Amy Lee Fullernoy (Rachel King) may have married the simpleton Cletis Fullernoy (Matthew Grand) for money and prestige, but her acumen will see her through. In the second part of the story, we meet Roy and his brother Ray as they try to make sense of how to face the future. This play showcases the funny and heartbreaking sides of love, small town living, and striving for purpose; it will make you laugh, cry, and ponder your own youthful choices.
Director Lennon Smith recently relocated to Oregon from Pacifica, California, where she practiced marriage and family therapy for 25 years. With an undergrad degree in Theater Arts, she also acted in and directed many plays, preferring lesser known works and those which were considered diamonds in the rough. She recently revealed, “When asked to direct Laundry and Bourbon/Lone Star, I quickly accepted, as I consider the work a little gem. The cast is wonderful and comes from all walks of life. If you are eager for a funny, thought-provoking evening, this play is definitely for you.”
