Is Tualatin an age-friendly (senior) city? What are the criteria for being an age-friendly (senior) city? Below are the criteria as found from AARP and other reliable sources. Please tell me what you think. Does Tualatin qualify? I’m not here to give you my opinion. I’m looking for comments, concerns and perspectives from Tualatin’s senior community so that the Tualatin Aging Task Force can study your replies, put together a report and work with the City to thank them for making sure Tualatin is age-friendly or find solutions to any problems that may exist. Why are we asking for your input? It is a fact that one of the biggest health issues/risks for seniors is isolation. Can we, as a community, help combat that with the following criteria?

Do you have more or different ideas? Please comment back to the new Aging Task Force email: aginginplace80@gmail.com.

1. Accessible Infrastructure:

  • Transportation: reliable and affordable public transit, including on-demand services. Transit stops should be well-lit, have benches and shelters, and be easily accessible.
  • Sidewalks and pathways having smooth surfaces, minimal obstructions and adequate lighting
  • Buildings and facilities have accessible entrances, ramps, and elevators for ease of movement and participation in public places
  • Community gardens, libraries, parks and other gathering places to offer social interaction and engagement opportunities.

2. Supportive Policies and Services:

  • A range of housing options, including single-family homes, apartments, co-housing and ADUs to accommodate diverse needs and preferences
  • Easy access to healthcare providers, medical facilities and social support services
  • Opportunities to engage in civic life, contribute to the community and stay connected

3. Social Inclusion and Respect:

  • Create a culture that values older adults, respects their choices and preferences, and prevents discrimination
  • Access to social groups, clubs, and senior programs that foster interaction and connection to combat social isolation
  • Clear and accessible communication channels, including public information, social media, and community events to stay informed and engaged

4. Health and Well-being:

  • Clean air and water, proper waste management and measures to reduce pollution for a healthy living environment
  • Promote opportunities for physical activity such as parks, recreational facilities and walking paths to encourage active lifestyles and promote physical and mental well-being
  • Access and support for mental health services as mental health and well-being are crucial for addressing the unique needs of older adults.

Do you feel Tualatin offers all of the above, some of the above or none of the above? Do you have something to add to the above list, or is there something on the list that you feel is not necessary (and why)? Your thoughts and opinions are important and will be extremely valuable to the Aging Task Force for their report. Thank you.
