The Tigard-Tualatin School District announced this month its new Superintendent will be Dr. Iton-Etok O Udosenata, who joins the District from his current post as Salem-Keizer School District’s Deputy Superintendent.

The appointment follows a national search to fill the vacancy left by Dr. Sue Rieke-Smith, who will retire at the end of the month.

“I understand the importance, now more than ever, of fostering safe and welcoming schools that nurture our students’ academic and social-emotional needs from the day they enter our classrooms as kindergartners to when they accept a diploma as graduates,” Dr. Udosenata said in a written announcement of his appointment.

During his four years as Salem-Keizer’s Deputy Superintendent, Udosenata has overseen secondary instruction, student and family services, and the Office of Student Equity, Access and Advancement.

He’s credited with successfully helping to settle a new teacher’s contract and serving on the executive team that bridged an $80 million budget shortfall.

“Because of his focus on working as a collective to advance student outcomes and his commitment to centering students in every decision, it was clear to the board that Dr. Udosenata would be the perfect leader for our district,” said Board Chair Tristan Irvin. “His demonstrated ability to foster academic achievement, promote equity, and build collaborative relationships with our parents, community leaders, and local organizations are key areas that will guide our district forward and build on our successes.”

Dr. Udosenata holds a BA in Ethnic Studies, an MA in Education Leadership, and a Doctorate in Education Methodology, Policy, and Leadership from the University of Oregon.

He takes the helm at Tigard-Tualatin on July 1.
