Drag Racing Extraordinaire Sadie Floyd

0

Sadie Floyd is an up and coming drag racing extraordinaire in the National Hot Rod Association.
Making an impact on the sport at the young age of 11, Sadie has always had the need for speed. Sadie’s father, John Floyd, is the owner of Tualatin Tranmission and has been supporting her career for the last decade and has been racing along side her, in the same competitive class, for the last
four years.

The sport of drag racing is an extremely male dominated sport but Sadie feels like she fits right in when it comes to competing with the men. “I’ve always felt that a racer is a racer, I don’t pay attention to gender much when I am on that track. Male or female, I want to do the best I can as a driver to beat everyone I come up against. I race men 95% of the time and it doesn’t bother me one bit. I feel that I am able to keep up with the men I race against and give them a run for their money”, Sadie says.

Breaking Our Sugar Addiction

0

Annual US consumption of refined sugar reached 20 million tons in 2010. That amounts to 142 lbs of sugar for every man, woman, and child. The average American receives nearly 16% of their daily calories from refined sugar. These are remarkable statistics since as recently as 1500AD refined sugar was considered a very rare and exotic “fine spice”. For most of human history refined sugar didn’t exist. Today’s abundance of refined sugar comes out of corn, cane and beets.

In nature “sweetness” is a signal to our senses that a food is ripe and at its peak of freshness
and nutritional value. Modern food scientists have utilized this sensual interpretation to trick
our body’s into thinking processed foods are also fresh and nutritionally rich. Processed
foods are in fact quite the opposite. Processed foods have been stripped of the nutrients
found in fresh foods in order to prevent spoiling. This is done to maximize commercial
shelf life. The quantities of sugar added to betray our senses greatly exceed what occurs
in fresh foods.

TuHS Grads Expanding “Wild Squirrel Nut Butter”

Hello Everyone!

We’re Keeley and Erika –Tualatin High School graduates, University of Oregon students and founders of Wild Squirrel Nut Butter.

Wild Squirrel began one rainy Sunday afternoon, when we were in our college apartment, scraping the bottom of yet another jar of generic peanut butter. With no more peanut butter, and a surplus of celery, we were faced with a familiar conundrum. However, neither of us wanted to ride our bike in the pouring rain to the store to buy more.

The “Artist” Rachel Konty

0

A photographer from Greek φωτός (photos), meaning “light”, and γράφω (graphos), meaning “written.” Rachel Konty is this and more. The more, in my eyes, an artist, and truly human. You may know this artist or you may not yet, but I know for certain, this is someone you will want to know in your lifetime. Born in 1981 in Arizona the story started. Being creative as a child, always designing things, being finicky about the most meticulous details of theworld around her to how her clothing coordinated. She always saw things in pictures, settings, moments to stand still so that it could be captured. And, it is her love for literature (Sherlock Holmes and Greek Mythology being her favorite) that has developed this photographer into the artist she is today. I would also note the support, investment and love of her father and mother. They are some of her biggest fans. Five things my wife will be holding at some point in the day are: a cup of tea, a book, Lily(our pup), Prince(our other pup) and a camera.

The Journey to Achieving a Black Belt

0

All of us have set goals for ourselves at some point in our lives and some of them are big ones, like earning a college degree, or scaling a mountain, or even cleaning out the garage. Three years ago, two Tualatin residents set a pretty big goal for themselves – to earn their black belt in Taekwondo. While they may have had different reasons to begin their training both shared similar inspirations along the way. They share their story here as they reflect on their journey together.
