On June 14, SSI (Senior Studies Institute) is holding a get-acquainted and recruiting event in the form of a picnic in Tualatin Community Park. Older, newer and prospective members are all invited to mingle, share sandwiches and a potluck and get acquainted. The goal is to increase membership and participation in this non-profit educational group for seniors.

So, what in the world is SSI? SSI is a senior learning organization run entirely by volunteers affiliated with the Portland Community College Foundation. It provides presentations, discussions and other events designed for seniors. It is a place where older adults share an exploration of topics of mutual interest, contribute their experience and expertise and expand their circle of friends. Members have access to various class and discussion formats on ZOOM and in person.

Interested in single lectures on Roman religion, fungi, or the history of food? How about learning how to avoid those pesky scammers or how to create artwork in the style of Gustav Klimt or Jasper Johns? There are single meeting classes on a huge range of topics. Three different lectures a week are presented either in person or on ZOOM. Check out the website at ssipdx.org for class information.

If you’re looking for ongoing meetings, several current event groups meet weekly in different locations. The film group meets almost weekly to discuss movies that are considered classic or noteworthy. Want to read plays? Learn more about poetry? How about a writing salon? Is that your thing?

This picnic will be attended by new, continuing and prospective members. This is an opportunity to learn about an incredible group of people passionate about learning and sharing what they know with others. The picnic is from 11:30 to 2 p.m. in Tualatin Community Park

Interested parties are encouraged to stop by. Please RSVP to Andy at am7477@gmail.com if you are coming.

been a member of the Senior Studies Institute organization for two years now. As a former teacher, I’m always interested in learning about various topics. SSI has offered individual lectures and ongoing classes, which I have enjoyed. You can find me regularly in the bimonthly poetry appreciation and writing salon. I also follow the nonfiction book club and occasionally participate in their book discussions. But most importantly, through SSI, I have become connected to a fascinating and motivating group of people from many backgrounds and interests.
