When Johnny Comes Marching Home

Through the years, when the call came to serve our country on foreign ground, Tualatin has
always sent its share of young manhood. When the Great War ended in 1918, some Tualatin
kids tied baling wire together and fastened the end to the bell rope in the old Tualatin Grade and High School. Then, hiding out behind some bushes, they yanked on the wire and the bell rang out again and again. It was a great way to celebrate the occasion.
Slowly the soldier boys came home. Some, like Claude Nyberg and Walter Cimino told of their brave experiences, others like Clarence Stevens who suffered from shell shock or the the effects of mustard gas lived out their lived haunted by the horrors of war.
