The Tigard-Tualatin School District is asking voters to renew a five-year levy to retain about 100 teachers and maintain current programming and class sizes without adding a new tax.
If passed, it would extend current levy funding, maintaining a property tax of $1 per $1000 of assessed value. That tax, most recently approved in November 2018, is set to expire at the end of this school year.
According to the District website, “Levy funds pay for about 100 teaching positions across the District. Those teachers deliver rich programming such as career exploration, after-school activities, and partnerships with community colleges.”
Voters originally approved the levy in 2000, then voted to renew it in 2004, 2008, 2014, and 2018.
Taxes vary depending on property value. For example, a house assessed at $300,000 would be taxed $300 a year ($25 per month) under the current levy. That cost, if voters approve a renewal, will extend to 2030 without increasing.
If the levy fails and TTSD no longer receives option levy dollars, its budget for staffing and educational programs will be reduced by about $12.6 million in the 2025-26 school year.
The levy, if approved, is estimated to raise about $67 million over five years.
