How I overcame my students’ question: Where am I ever going to use this?

I’ve been teaching grades 4-6 for 4 years and this is probably the most common question my students ask. They want to know why it is important to learn mathematics or science. Students who find these subjects difficult or irrelevant tend to give up easily and pay less attention in class. A lot of my students of color and girls don’t imagine they could work in high-paying, high-skill STEM jobs that require knowledge of math and science.
